People frequently ask: "What does that mean?" Whether you've worked with a graphic design firm before or not, you either have or will encounter some befuddling lingo. Below you'll find a list of terms that we use in our work. If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask us - we're here to make things easy!
ADMINISTRATION: The office side of the business ... from client meetings, research, getting estimates ... to filing, archiving and billing. Every project requires some amount of administration to maintain the proper execution & schedule.
ARCHIVES: Once a project has been completed, we burn files to a disc and create an index so that we can access those files again in the future if necessary. Any related paperwork, printouts and final samples are also filed. ART DIRECTION: We will dictate the overall feel of a project using art direction. This includes giving specific instructions to the printer regarding color control, or overseeing the details and setup of a photo shoot. COMPS: Before a file is sent to print, we'll assemble a mock-up to give you an idea of what the final printed piece will look like. Comps can also make a useful sales tools to test your product (present it to a buyer or take it to a tradeshow) before having it mass-produced. CONSULTING: Field-related advice and suggestions to assist you in achieving your goals. COPYWRITING: Sometimes a professional writer can add clarity and creativity to your marketing message. We can use the supplied client copy, edit it or review it for clarity, but we also work with a great copywriter should you need more! LAYOUT: The manner in which type and images/graphics interplay. FINAL SAMPLES: Once a project is completed, we request that at least 5-10 samples of the final printed piece or manufactured product be sent to us so that we can photograph the work for our portfolio as well as have a final copy on hand for reference. (Less for product design.) GRAPHIC DESIGN: Graphic design is the practice of creating visual solutions to communications problems. Color, type, illustration, photography are assembled into a layout specific to your project. ILLUSTRATION: Visual graphics generated for a layout. They can appear as the main element, or be used as texture or background contributing to the overall mood of a piece. PHOTO RETOUCHING: Thanks to the magic of Photoshop, great photos can be further enhanced digitally to create an even stronger image from assembling multiple images into a single image to removing the dust & scratches ... to correcting the color. PHOTO SHOOT: An appointment with a photographer, either at their studio or on location, to photograph any subject matter. Can involve art direction and photo styling. PHOTO STYLING: Creating an environment, setting or look for a photo shoot. We can make the food look delicious, the products look pretty, and make sure models are well dressed to create the right mood for selling the product. PRODUCTION: Once a design is approved, we finalize the details, apply the design to all required materials, & prep the file(s) for printing. PROOFING: Before we send a piece to the printer, we methodically check details such as text, photo placement and digital links. *But ultimately, the client is responsible for correct text and final approval.
